January 24 New Year, New Job, New Camera, New PhotosLadies, Gents, and people who fit in to neither
category, please draw your attention to the left sidebar of the page (perhaps
scroll down a little)...
New pictures!!
I finally got around to putting some pics up - me
in my fabulous Heart Foundation sweatbands from my marathon (to my gorgeous
sponsors, apologies for the waiting) and also one of my showing how I cut up
onions.
In case you are wondering where I got the fabulous
sunglasses from, the answer is simple. My Dad.
See, Dad is special. He likes to buy little gifts
for Christmas as well as the usual big pressies. He went to the optometrist for
a check up before Christmas and saw these interesting sunglasses and bought 4
pairs. One for The Boyfriend, One for The Brother, One for The Brother's
Girlfriend and One for Me. Mine are the best I think. The Boyfriend's ones look
almost normal, whereas mine look something akin to welding goggles, but with a
funky orange tint.
I think I pull them off well.
You will also see some photos of my birdies - they
are wild, but they come and visit my front deck / balcony every day. I used to
feed them honey, and then found out that honey is bad for the birdies. So now
they get "wild bird seed" from the pet store (yes, I pay for bird food for birds
I do not own). Birds are unhappy with the situation, as they liked the honey. In
fact, they used to land on my hand before I even would pick up the plate to go
and GET honey, and come inside. Now, they look at the seeds and give me this
"what the hell is this woman?" expression - as evidenced by the birdie on the
plate in the photo.
The other one with the cockatoo in it shows how I
deal with cockatoos. Put the plate down and slowly back away - those bastards
are BIG. they flapped down one day to see what the cute rainbow lorikeets were
doing (green birdies) and were interested by the seeds. Now they come down and
want some too. Fat chance they have of landing on my hand for some... I'd run
100m before I'd allow that - their claws are as long as my pinkie finger, and
their beaks are a hell of a lot bigger than a lorikeets... I also doubt they
"play bite" like the lorikeets do. Lorikeets lightly lick your finger to see if
it's tasty, cockatoos rip it off, take the flesh off the bone and THEN decide if
they want your hand.
As for the OTHER photo... well.
Finished my induction today, and I officially rock
Fitness First at Sylvania as of Monday.
Anyone want a trainer? Don't you love my
uniform?

put hand in pocket, smile and try to look natural.

January 23 So Busy!Sorry for the lack of updates recently guys, but
I've been flat out trying to get the business all organised for my first day on
Monday!
I have my business name (got that last year), and
now my ABN, and an accountant (don't I sound important). I don't need to worry
about business accounts and GST, so that's all good too. Now I just have to work
out a direct debit system and payment options.
Induction is really interesting. We spend the most
of the day in a room being explained all about triple packs and how to work
them, and how to add value to personal training. Then in the afternoon we spend
a couple of hours in Fitness First Bondi Platinum (where my brother used to
work) and do some 10min circuits, coming up with different exercises and things,
trainer another trainer. Sometimes they're a new member who doesn't know much
and can't do a lot of exercises, and other times they've worked out a bit before
and can do a little more. They make it more challenging by sometimes making you
use only one piece of equipment (e.g. bosu or dumbbells) or adding cardio in
between the strength exercises. Loving it - learnt heaps, and put the Don't Be A
Fat Mole girls through some of it last night - I'm so nice.
In order for a session to be good, they want to see
1) Smiling, 2) Sweating and 3) Swearing. I think I excel in getting the last
one. I got a "f**king hell" yesterday, and I cheered.
Still nervous about training on Monday (or
attempting to train someone!) and what we're supposed to do on the floor. But
Matt (who I will be starting with) is feeling the same, so it's alright, we're
both freaked out. :)
But it reminds me - I'm going to be such a
publicity slut on this blog soon. If anyone knows anyone in the Sylvania /
Miranda / Southern Sydney area that needs a trainer - send me an email realfit@internode.on.net !!! I can
train at Fitness First Sylvania, and I also do outdoor sessions too! You can
train on your own, or with some friends - I can make more than one person swear
at the same time, I'm that talented.
People, gotta run, I have to drive to Bondi (wanky
suburb extraordinaire - seriously, what kind of shopping centre food court shop
sells LOBSTER and OYSTERS??) and get into some more training. My manager is
going to be there today, so I have to be on my best behaviour... well, kind
of.
January 12 It's Done.So, resigned today.
Felt like absolute crap. My manager (Sam) was like
in shock, so was my mentor at Vision (Deni), but they're both leaving in a
month, so I can't feel TOO bad for them. But I felt bad for everyone else that
is picking up my clients, and also for my clients, who don't even know
yet.
And I can't tell them, because I don't work there
anymore. Instead of letting me work the week out and say goodbye, I was
basically told "if you don't want to work here, we end today" and so I'm done.
Return my folder on Monday morning, and it will be officially over. I can
understand from their point of view, but I thought me working the last week
would at least be helpful a little. Oh well, I have a week holiday.
Which will be spent finding an accountant,
organising bank accounts, taxation things, getting an ABN (Australian Business
Number), signing contracts and generally preparing for induction on Monday week.
Also intend to do Boat Harbour (10km) and perhaps a really long run / walk
(maybe longer than a marathon) one day. May as well make the most of it. So,
still busy, just not training.
It feels like a weights been lifted from me, and I
will probably sleep the best I have in a month tonight.
Guess what guys? I'm a business
owner.
Decision MadeSylvania it is.
Now, considering my previous posts on the subject,
this may seem like a strange choice. Not the one you may have been
expecting.
But, after weighing the pros and cons seriously,
after finding out the Woolooware / Cronulla won't be opening until mid-April (at
the earliest) which is 1/4 of a year away and after thinking about my monetary
situation, I've made my choice to start at Sylvania. Getting a bill for $1,000
to service and fix my car didn't help Vision's case much either.
Now, today I have to explain this to Vision, and
also my brother (who was rooting for the new club) who will no doubt think I'm
an idiot.
He'll also think I'm an idiot because I have taken
my parents' couch off their hands, which he thinks is really ugly. :) But that's
a whole 'nother post.
I'm dreading this morning. I slept a little better
last night, having made my decision, but I was still dreading today. I mean,
Vision kind of screwed me over with the whole "4 trainers starting at once" kind
of thing, plus the whole 2.5 hours in my first week, when I thought I was coming
into clients left by another trainer. But still, the management are so nice and
friendly, the other staff are great and I love my clients. I'm not going to
steal any of them, but if they would like to come and train at Sylvania with me,
I'll readily have them. :)
So, off I go poppets - will let you know the
results later.
January 06 We Are Weight WatchersApparently, Aussies are into weight
loss.
Also apparently, we need to be.
Aussies Are Keen Weight
Watchers
http://www.smh.com.au/news/health/fat-where-we-fit-in-the-big-picture/2008/01/03/1198949986730.html Our waistlines may have expanded under the excesses of the season, but Australians are among the world's biggest users of weight loss programs, according to an international survey on obesity. The survey of almost 10,000 people, including more than 800 Australians, found that 9.2 per cent of Australians join weight loss courses from companies such as Jenny Craig and Weight Watchers, compared with 9.6 per cent of Britons, 8.5 per cent in the US and 5.2 per cent in France. More than 7 million Australians aged 25 and over are considered overweight and, of these, more than 2 million are obese, according to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare. The director of the Institute of Health Economics and Technology assessment, Paul Gross, said as the obesity epidemic rose, Australians were more likely to seek help losing weight. "When we get to levels of desperation … all sorts of options that were seen as too expensive or time-consuming are suddenly considered," Dr Gross said. Despite being weight conscious, Australians were relaxed when it came to weighing themselves, with 38 per cent likely to hop on the scales only when they remembered, and one in five not weighing themselves at all, according to the survey, conducted in 13 countries including Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Canada, Saudi Arabia and Brazil. Dr Gross said about half of overweight or obese people considered their weight ideal. "If you want to deny something don't measure it," said Dr Gross, who has called for the amount of exercise school children take to be recorded on school reports. "Parents who are overweight are less likely to think their children are too." Throughout the world, about 1.6 billion people aged 15 and over are overweight and at least 400 million are obese, the World Health Organisation says. Those figures are expected to rise to about 2.3 billion adults overweight and more than 700 million obese by 2015. The survey, by the global marketing company Synovate, revealed conflicting attitudes to healthy eating in the countries surveyed. More than half of all respondents (54 per cent) said they ate whatever they wanted, whenever they wanted. However, more than two thirds (68 per cent) said they watched their food intake carefully and tried to be healthy. Most Australians believed obesity was caused by an unhealthy diet, followed by a lack of exercise and self-discipline. January 05 The Recipe For MeI reckon I could be pretty tasty!

January 04 New Year - Improved KatieI was going to write "New & Improved", but how
can something be new AND improved? If it's new, it hasn't been done before, and
therefore can not yet be improved.
Sorry, tangent there...
So, back from my holidays - a little browner, and a
little more thankful that I have what I have. Seriously people, never go on
holidays with a big mixed group of friends and expect it to all be hunky dory.
There will be tears, there will be fights, there will be more tears, and that
was the first night. There were plenty more tears, the ending of a relationship
on New Years (nice timing guys) and the total hypocrisy of some people who I
thought were normal. *sigh* But I am slightly tanned (a little red in places
that usually don't see much sun) and ready to start the new year with a bang. I
am also very thankful that The Boyfriend (sadly, not The Fiancé yet, still) is
normal, considerate, caring, gets along with my friends and family & doesn't
come with multiple personalities.
First blog of 2008 - first order of
business:
2007 - A Quick Recap: aka Things I Can Remember
Doing In The Last 12 Months
1) Finished my Certificate IV in Fitness at TAFE
with Distinctions in everything I was graded in. I rock.
2) Topped my entire course for Certificate III and
got a cool trophy for it. I rock more.
3) Left my job at Life Fitness (there, named it)
for Vision Personal Training, after much decision making and piss farting around
trying to decide if it was worth it. It was lifestyle wise, but money wise -
considering I've taken a $600 a week paycut - not so much.
4) Lost and gained the same 5kg - although I'm
still under 100kg at this point. Should be lower, but sitting on one's butt all
day tends to make you NOT lose weight, and also not knowing what and when
to eat does that too. Also, chocolate. Chocolate is not my friend. It's more of
a casual acquaintance that repeatedly turns up when I'm bored or
upset.
5) Realised (and this may sound conceited) that I
am reasonably good at being a trainer. My TAFE clients (friend Sam, and my Mum)
did really well in their training, and seemed to enjoy it. I currently train
girls from my basketball team - aka "Don't Be A Fat Mole" sessions - (which
include Sam's wife, so I must have done something right) and still train
Mum too. Also, my clients at work are motivated, looking fabulous and I've also
managed to get several of them requesting to train with me when their trainers
are away or have opened their own studios. I've also been called a dominatrix.
:) That was the best one.
6) Completed my first marathon without killing
myself. And also fully intend to complete the Six Foot Track in March, if I can
get a place in it. My asthma is playing up, but darn it, I'm going to give 45km
through mountains a red hot go. I'm also thinking of trying the 100km Gold Coast
event, which makes me an even bigger idiot.
7) Met some gorgeous blogger people in "real life"
- Donna, Katie P - thanks again for waiting at the marathon finish!
8) Learnt about Jewish holidays. Thank you
Gabrielle for the lesson on Christmas Day - it was so good to find out about all
that stuff, and to let you know what Christmas is all about - eating too much
and sleeping it off on the couch.
9) Finally told His Lord & Master at Life
Fitness where he could shove it. Sadly that was only in the last weeks of my
employ there, and wasn't as harsh as I COULD have made it. Still, if he knew the
amount of crap I got away with whilst I was there, he probably wouldn't be too
happy. Suffer in your jocks you Fat Gerber Baby. (That was for you Madison &
Dee).
10) Made myself proud of myself.
2008 - The Predictions & Resolutions: aka
Stuff I Want to Do, Stuff I Will Try To Do, & Stuff That Is Just Not Going
To Happen.
1) Get to 19% Body Fat. Not a certain weight
because I don't know how much muscle I could put on in the quest to get to that
percentage. At the moment I'm 34% according to Vision (4 site test), but my last
test with Darren (a nine site test) I was 21%. I may have put on SOME fat, but I
haven't put on 13%. I'm going to test with Darren again in January to see what
his measures say, and work off those. I don't like the Vision ones, because they
only use 4 sites, and not the usual 6 or 9.
2) Complete Another Marathon in Under 5
Hours. Did 5hr 21min last year, and want to smash that this year. It
could be Rotorua (excuse for a holiday), Canberra (visit Jess) or Sydney again,
I don't know, but I am going to crack it.
3) Complete An Ultra-Endurance Event. Either
a run (6' Track, Gold Coast 100) or triathlon (do my own Ironman event - maybe
for charity?) or some stupid thing that will hurt for weeks to
come.
4) Renovate Another Room in Our House.
Probably the bedroom, cause I want to enjoy that space, or maybe the study, so
I'm more inclined to spend time in here. :)
5) Write a Budget, Stick To It & Make
Sh*tloads of Money. The last one ain't going to happen at Vision, it's going
to happen at Fitness First, or on my own - most likely at Fitness First. Let me
explain - 30 hours a week at Vision is $540, the same at Fitness First (where I
could charge $70/hour) is $2,100 - $250 for the rent. Gee, hard choice, huh??
The decision is now which one to go to. Sylvania (already been offered a job,
would start 28th January, but where there's 35 other trainers) or Woolooware /
Cronulla (which is opening March 15, has not trainers, but I don't know if
they're hiring yet).
6) Hopefully (Not In My Control) Win Personal
Trainer Of The Year for My Certificate IV At TAFE. Would love to get it, but
it's out of my hands now. The teachers liked me, I topped all my subjects and my
clients for the work experience got some great results - fingers crossed, I find
out in May.
That's it. I'm not trying to reinvent the wheel,
and I'm not going to break any records. I'm just going to try and make this the
best year ever for Katie. Hopefully that will also mean making it a good year
for The Boyfriend, my family and my friends too.
To all my friends, readers (what, two of you?) and
lurkers who are reading this - I hope 2008 is your best year too. I hope you set
your goals high, and reach them with ease. I hope you have a year full of health
and happiness & achieve many things you never thought
possible.
"May the road rise to meet
you,
May the wind always be at your
back,
May the sun shine warm upon your
face,
The rains fall soft upon your
fields, and
Until we meet
again,
May God hold you in the palm of
His Hand."
- Irish Blessing
Till next time, which hopefully will be
soon!
